Next Show: Sic Alps

Sic Alps, Father Murphy + Very Special Guests, The Basement, York. Sun. 21st Aug. 8pm, £6adv/£7.50otd.

One of the best bands to come out of San Francisco in recent memory, Led by Mike Donovan, Sic Alps are sometimes a duo, sometime a trio, sometimes more. For their latest US tour, his bandmates were King Riff and one Ty Segall, which is probably the line up we'll see here.

Evidently fans of their home towns rich musical heritage, ...there's plenty of trippy elongated guitar jams, sixties influenced lo-fi pop ditties and searing blues tinged rock. They've created a hell of a live reputation over the last couple of years having played with PAVEMENT, YO LA TENGO, GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR, WOODEN SHJIPS, TIMES NEW VIKING, EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING and toured with SONIC YOUTH and MAGIK MARKERS among others. This is their second visit to The Basement for Please Please You and if they're anywhere near as good as last time, it'll be a bloody treat.

Sic Alps have released records on Siltbreeze, Important, Woodist, Slumberland and are now very much at home on Drag City (Monotonix, Silver Jews, Om, Palace/Will Oldham, Smog etc.). They release their first new material for ages in August, the 'Breadhead' EP.

'But here, amidst the nods to a noisier past and the occasional dip into intoxicated broken blues ("Clubbing for $$", "CO/CA"), U.S. EZ breaks through with tracks like "Everywhere, There", which takes woozy primitive pop and transforms it into something simultaneously fragile and coarse and then, suddenly, sublime.'
